The Wretched

Andy H.

OK...I've been asked to write a small piece about myself, well, here goes. My name is Andy, and I hail from a small island just south of the English Channel, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. I know, mysterious right? I love all things horror: games, films and especially books. I have been writing for an audience of one for twenty years or so now. There are several of my short stories in Horror Weekly and now also Terror Monthly. I have released a book of short stories called "Head Shots" available on Lulu books...take a look if you like. The crew I am associated with are the biggest bunch of crazies, psychos and sociopaths that I could ever wish to call friends...my comrades in arms. I hope that I can call The Butchered Writers my second home for a long time to come. The following story is a little, short disturbing tale of science used wrong, and the people who would use it for profit. I hope you enjoy it...

Brannan Killen

My name is Brannan Killen. I have had the life-long goal of publishing a novel since I was little and became infatuated with reading and well told stories. I grew up in a small town in rural Arizona (think 300 kids from preschool to 8th grade) where everybody knew each other by name. I joined the United States Marine Corps after high-school. I served nearly seven years on active-duty. I spent two years in Eastern and Central Africa, and one year in Europe while protecting embassies and dignitaries. I had many experiences while overseas that influenced and colored my worldview. I live in northern Arizona currently and still dedicate my life to public service as an investigator. I am married with one child and two cattle dogs. I love hiking, hunting, reading, firearm training, and writing- of course! My favorite authors are James Rollins, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ernest Hemingway. I lean more towards long-form literary works but have recently delved into the short story horror genre and have found it to be quite entertaining! I hope you enjoy what you read!

Bran

I'm bran, I like walks on the beach and even longer walks off of shorter piers. I write Horror Fiction mostly in the splatterpunk and extreme genres as well as comic form. I collect horror films and I'm a sucker for a good giallo or sci-fi horror movie. I live somewhere in the southwest with a bunch of feral kids and a dog

Brooke Lockman

My name is Brooke Lockman and I live in North Carolina. I do many forms of art all the way to painting, sculpting and writing. Writing has helped me escape the daily struggles and past traumas that circle and bend my mind. Sometimes you gotta put the demons onto paper and maybe, just maybe, you will still find that flickering light that still lays deep within you.

Brook is an amazing artist and is reponsible for the cover art for Terror Monthly and the graphics for this site.

David E. Anderson

I grew up in the 70's loving Godzilla movies and the "Night Stalker" series, my introduction to horror. I became a true horror fanatic in my teen years, devouring books by the likes of Stephen King, F. Paul Wilson, and Dean Koontz. I wanted to try my hand at what they do so well. I wrote my first novel "The Void", in my mid-teens. I have since written six more, three of which I've self-published ("Doorways", "Desperate" and "Nerdy Work" are all on Amazon). I am currently trying to get my latest horror/sci-fi novel, "Sweet Dreams", professionally published. In my earlier years, I'd written many short stories, but ended up switching exclusively to novels around the time I graduated college. This story, "Lirpa", was the first short story I'dwritten in decades for an early version of the group now known as "The Butchered Writers". I'd put it aside until now.

He has written a number of yet to be published short stories along with a novelette based on a demon from Japanese folk lore. He hosts a blog consisting of paranormal true experiences, paranormal fiction and urban legends at https://paranormalcampfirestories.blogspot.com

F.Munden

Hello readers, I'm Finlay Munden. I believe reality is only a surface-level concept when it comes to fiction. I like to write stories about what's underneath that reality, or things that humans find incomprehensible. To me, the scariest things are when our views of the world are either totally subverted or when familiar things take on a level of malevolence, giving the characters nowhere to hide. There is a potent horror in hopelessness and cosmic indifference, and that's my motto when it comes to writing. That's why I'm currently writing a novel in that vein of the human condition, and it's what has informed my story for this issue of Terror Monthly. I've written stories for previous Terror Monthly issues, including "Murder Under Mistletoe" in Slaughter Claus and 'Creature from the Corn Fields' in Urban Legends.

Sarah Bauer

Sarah Bauer lives in Arizona with her two sons. She has been a fan of all things horror for as long as she can remember. An avid reader, she loves to dabble in the genres of horror and psychological thrillers. She has a heavy thirst for the sub genres of splatterpunk and extreme horror. She does not mind a good, fast paced suspense to wash it all down. Currently, she writes stories for Terror Monthly and Written in Carnage. Her stories fall into the psychological and extreme horror sub-genres. Pushing boundaries with a good story-line underneath all the gore is her cup of tea.

A fan of anthology series such as The Twilight Zone and The Haunting of Hill House, she prefers the instant gratification of a well written short story to the buildup of novels. Jason Nickey

Hello, Butchered Readers! My name is Jason Nickey. I am a horror writer from Charleston, West Virginia. I started out in the indie horror genre as an avid reader and reviewer, but eventually built up the courage to start writing as well. I have been writing on and off my whole life, but have been doing it seriously and self-publishing for about two years now. I have written mostly shorter fiction; having released three short story collections, three novellas, and three collaborations with other authors. My stories cover a range of horror, anywhere from suspense thriller, to comedy and extreme horror/splatter. While I enjoy reading and writing all types of horror, I definitely have more fun with horror comedy, which is why I chose the story below for this months entry. This story was first published in my collection They Come From Within. This collection, as well as my other works, can be found on Amazon in both eBook and paperback format. I also sell signed copies of my work at https://bibliobeard.bigcartel.com/

Jeffrey Caston

Jeffrey Caston is a Pacific Northwest native who currently makes his home in the Puget Sound region. Inspired by reading at a young age, he took up writing by the age of 11. He became an instant fan of Anne Rice and Stephen King. He is embarking on a new phase in life with indie writing. His writing will have a marked horror bent, but will include elementsof thrillers, science fiction, and fantasy. His debut novel, Immunity, marks the start of his "Horrific Northwest" setting and multiverse. His stories will provide you with a richly detailed world with characters you can meet again and again. He can be reached at jeffreycastonbooks@outlook.com.

John J. Clements

Armed with sharp wit and an eye for social commentary, you will find lots of Johns writing in the realms of science fiction, thrillers, mystery and westerns, but it will always be rooted in the blood-soaked twisted halls of horror. Forget happy endings, John's twisted lens on reality will make you question the masks we wearin the digital age and everyday life. His debut novel, SCUMBAG, takes a scalpel to the underbelly of social media, exposing the trolls, influencers, and everyone in between who make the internet both a terrifying and hilarious place. So, are you ready to look into the shadows and see what awaits you? Step into John's world and see for yourself.

Jimi Peranteau

Jimi Peranteau (A.K.A Jimi P.) is a 21 year old.... okay, okay, so I'm not 21! I'm 40 years old. Truth be told, I don't act like it. Don't believe me, just ask my kids! One will tell you I'm a kid at heart, another one will tell you I have a seriously demented mind. While my two boys will just laugh and say you don't want to know! My wife on the other hand will tell you how she married me knowing all my little quirks before even I did and she wouldn't change a thing, although I'm convinced she only married me for my bank account. Jokes on her, because I don't have one worth marrying for! All joking aside, I am an Extreme Horror/Splatterpunk author relatively new to the scene. I am the author of the Welcome to Satanville series. My first novella in the series is Leg of Jane. It was supposed to be a movie, but apparently books were more in line with my train of thought. I finished Leg of Jane and waited around six years before I would write the next entry into the Satanville series, Bloodlines. The only reason I waited so long was because I had no idea this genre even existed! Even when I self published my first novella, I still didn't understand how many people enjoyed the horrifically disgusting, fantastically grotesque descriptions that filled the pages of my hobby. Before I finished my series I started another one. The Torturing of Mr. Stevens. Unlike my previous series, this is an on-going, possibly never-ending world building adventure based around a group of gods (yes little "g") bent on answering one question... how much can one soul take before it's very essence becomes corrupt, to the point of insanity? Mr. Stevens will become not only the psycho, but also the victim throughout multiple lifetimes in order to answer that one questions. All of my work can be found on Amazon by searching my name (Jimi Peranteau not like I need to state that again, but while you're at it, you might want to add books into the filter because Amazon does like to hide my work!) The story you are about to read has a character in it that is influenced by my dad. He was the first person to really show me that you can build a world around someone and it did not have to be built on rainbows and butterflies! Dan is a character he introduced me to when I was a wee little boy and found myself overly interested in all things horror. In the future I do plan on writing this characters full story, but until then, please enjoy Dan in... Consensual Necrophilia!

Ryan McGregor

Brace yourself for a journey through the chilling landscapes of Ghost, Slasher, Thriller and Cosmic Horror amongst other horror genres, as this author guides you through the corridors of their dark and twisted imagination, leaving an indelible mark on the psyche of those who dare to read.

Zack Graham

Zack was born and raised in the high country of Arizona. He grew up in the rural Tonto wilderness, where his older sister forced him to watch gory 90's horror flicks every time she babysat. The combination of scary movies and tall, ominous pine trees beyond Zack's bedroom window created a constant line of 'what if? questions in the back of his head. There were other terrors besides the television; local legends of skinwalkers and the infamous Mogollon Monster, the historic cemetery plot, Dead Man's Curve and the car wreckage at the bottom, on top of all the allegedly haunted houses in that little forest town. There was even an old abandoned cabin dubbed 'the slaughterhouse' where early settlers were said to have murdered Natives that refused to move to the reservation. Zack believes many small towns across America have similar legends, but at the time, mysteries such as these all but defined his interests as a writer. Then there was the library: mom and dad kept a healthy nook full of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Hillerman, and other mystery authors. The covers stood out to him most, with their bright, spiraling colors and otherworldly illustrations. These early exposures acted like a trail of breadcrumbs for Zack, who followed them into the darker corner of the school library. There he found Alvin Schwartz and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, alongside titles like Goosebumps and other kid mysteries. Zack’s been drawn to the dark and macabre ever since. Some of his earliest childhood memories involve sneaking into his dad's office, stealing clean white paper from the printer, folding and then stapling it along the spine. Zack attended college in Wyoming and is the author of Mogollon Monsters. He decided to publish his own anthology after winning a series of short story contests throughout 2023.

Zachary Markley:
Chosen by the Dark

There's no abyss more dreadful than the empty page. As a writer, you meet this beast early on and do your best to stare back into it without going mad. It's easier said than done, but by staying persistent and consistent it all comes together eventually. Writing was a passion I fostered early in my life (along with my love for music and filmmaking) but make no mistake: the horror genre chose me. I first noticed it taking hold in high school when my harmless sci-fi and adventure tales would take horrific turns, my crime fiction depicted gruesome murders, and even my war stories focused more on psychological terror than anything else. In hindsight, reading Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, and Michael Crichton probably didn't help. In college, I dove deeper into horror and found other creative voices I connected with including Shirley Jackson, Henry James, and H.P. Lovecraft. My prose writing took a backseat for many years while I pursued a career in filmmaking and screenwriting. Thanks to the global pandemic, a couple of strikes, and other life events, I returned to crafting fiction full-time in 2022, and I couldn't be happier. For samples of my work, check out previous editions of Terror Monthly. My debut novel Dreadful Science is releasing summer 2024, with a few smaller projects available earlier in the spring. You may find all of them on my website zacharymarkleyofficial.com or by searching for my name on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I look forward to crafting more stories of cosmic and psychological horror with The Butchered Writers and with my solo escapades. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have another empty void waiting to be filled with brand-new speculative tales of weird and maddening terror!

John Watson:

Born under a gloomy, grey, Scottish sky, it is perhaps no real surprise that darkness has always felt comfortable to John Watson. After countless hours spent in his local library, he found that he was more at home in the worlds of Clive Barker, Stephen King, and James Herbert than he was in his own. The need to carve out his own niche in the horror genre drove Watson to slice open his mind and let the words spill onto the page.

From donuts to mysterious karaoke bars in the middle of nowhere, Watson mines the depths of the ordinary to find the evil that lurks beneath the surface. He dares you to join him in his ongoing forays into the dark side
